The recent headliners of the 2008's US Presidential Campaign have been dominating the local papers and such have triggered the thoughts of our Table Topic Master, Darren Joe.

He structured tonight's table topic questions by asking,

"If you are a candidate, contending to be the next Prime Minister of Singapore...how would you approach the following national issues"

Subject matters ranging from the recent hike in taxi fares, questions if Singapore is a happy country to recent statistical survey of surging permanent residents, were tackled by the members of Lion City Toastmasters Club and even one of our spontaneous guest, Sean.

Sean, who attended the meeting with his wife - Lily, won the glory of being voted the Best Table Topic Speaker when he spoke on the challenges that Singaporeans are facing right now. Congratulations Sean!

During the prepared speech segment, coincidentally, the theme of our three speakers centred around the core principle of time management.

Josephine's vocal variety speech called to mind the importance of making time for issues that matter while June delivered a speech where she provoked the audience's thoughts of making full worth of our lives. Angela's advanced project had her speaking on the benefits of time management.

New Members Induction 2008 !

New members & their mentors

New members being inducted officially into Lion City Toastmasters Club

Guest, Angela Lansbury

Table Topic Master of the Evening, Johnny Tan with Guest, Jonathan Siah

Best Table Topic Speaker, Chern Chou

Lion City Toastmasters Club ushered in the New Year 2008 by inducting 6 new members! Bravo!

Our Vice President of Membership, Josephine Teo, conducted a cozy induction ceremony to officially swear in the new members.

William Tan, Johnny Tan, Darren Joe, Jason Bay, Elizabeth Sim and Madhavan Ekanathan (Absent) were installed as members of the Lion City Toastmasters Club on 14 Jan 2008!

Under the mentorship programme headed by Ting Chee Kheong, every new member will be assigned a mentor to assist them in crafting their first few prepared speeches.

Members of the club also participated by pledging to support the newbies in their quest for self-development and make their toastmasters journey a rewarding and fulfilling experience.

There to participate and witness the ceremony were 2 Guests, Angela Lansbury and Jonathan Siah - who googled us! Thank You!

Londoner, Angela, a frequent guest to the club, last visited Lion City 2 years ago in Year 2006. It was a pleasant surprise to see Angela drop by again! She was full of praises for the club when she took up the role as the General Evaluator for the night. Thanks Angela for your generosity!

Johnny Tan, the Table Topic Master of the Evening, added a new twist to the challenging segment.

Participants were asked to formulate stories off the cuff, using words picked in complete random. To spice it up further, participants had to link their stories to scenarios left off by the previous speaker!

It was a ball of laughter, watching participants cook up incredible tall tales. Chern Chou did a dazzling job of summarizing the theatrical segment, drawing relations to the real world.

The two prepared speech speakers, Darren Joe and Diana Low, each spoke on Project 2 and Project 6 respectively.

Darren spoke on the latest fad of how people can google each other and conduct background checks on individuals through their online identities; such as employers assessing potential employees' virtual representation through social networks like Friendster, MySpace or Facebook. Such methods may soon become a reality in Singapore! Great foresight Darren.

Diana gave a speech on the subject "Nag" when she chanced upon a "aunt agony" email published in a male lifestyle magazine. She talked about the different classifications of nagging and related examples of its occurence between the men and women.
